BAM – The Beginning and the End

Once they used to be young, enthusiastic and romantic, they wanted to leave something behind them so that their work had a meaning. They liked to sing and to be among their friends and their families; they had faith in future and their ideals. They were thousands who responded to the summons of the party and Brezhnev to build the Baikal-Amur Mainline – the shock construction of BAM. More than 4000 kilometers long track way that was finished in year 2003, is the largest and most complicated railway construction that has been built in last hundred years. With the collapse of USSR also the romance of BAM was over. The maintenance of railway brings huge losses for Russia every year but the BAM builders are left in hands of fate in a middle of taiga. A part of them turned back home but many of them were not awaited anymore. Here in taiga, although disappointed and left for surviving, constructors of BAM live among their people. „BAM: the Beginning and the End” is a subjective photo story by Aija Bley. The photo story speaks about the place and people who live in a shore of Baikal where in 70ties construction of BAM began.

Woman And Wind

The animation film The Wind and the Woman is a poetic story about the passionate love between a Woman and the Wind – love that has no limits.Once upon a time the Wind lived in a city in the East. Day in and day out he was driving the sand. One day the Woman arrived there from a distant city in the West. She succumbed to the playfulness of the Wind. Unexpectedly a great passion aroused. But the Woman’s holidays were drawing to and end and she returned to the city and her passionless husband.

The Wind got mad with anger and went looking for the Woman destroying everything on his way. When the world was almost completely destroyed he eventually found the Woman. Now she left everything and followed the Wind to the desert.

Dance of Elves

“Dance of Elves” is a fantastic journey of young girl between dreams and reality. Adrija lives in one of the peripheral area of Latvia, called Latgale. She regularly takes the long way to the capital Riga, because it opens new opportunities for her.  Adrija find herself free, happy, overtaken by ideas and successful girl, because all her wishes come true – there are trips, there is a victory in Biology Olympiad, interesting meetings and many other wonderful things.  But what to do when you suddenly realize that you don`t know what do you really want?

This film has been created in cooperation with German Television ZDF/3sat and Production Company Regard Film. The premiere of film was held in 29th of November, 2009 at 18:00 ZDF/3sat cycle “Mädchengeschichten” (Girls` stories).
Film has been created in Latvia. The author of film is director Aija Bley. She is also the author of the idea and cameraman of this film. The music has been composed by the percussionist of the music band “Pulse Effect”, Dzintars Vīksna.  Animation has been created by the young artist Inese Vēriņa. http://www.3sat.de/mediathek/mediathek.php?obj=15737&mode=play
